The first line of defense in combatting periodontal disease is scaling and root planing, which involves removal of plaque and tartar (calculus) below the gumline with subsequent smoothing of the tooth's root surface.
A variety of oral rinses may be utilized, either prescription or over-the-counter. In some cases, antibiotic therapy (localized or systemic) may be indicated.
A new, non-surgical treatment modality named the "PerioProtect System" is available; mouthguard-like trays are used to deliver low dose medication below the gum line to help eliminate disease-causing bacteria. The last line of defense is gum surgery.
There is no magic wand, however. Successful peridontal therapy depends on daily, diligent home care - a patient's responsibility.
